The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and UNICEF are collaborating on a hazard risk analysis for Nigeria to enhance disaster response. NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, and UNICEF’s Country Representative, Ms. Cristian Munduate, reviewed the analysis’ progress during a visit to NEMA headquarters in Abuja. The partnership aims to build disaster management capacity at the grassroots level, with a national validation and launch of the analysis planned in Abuja. Mrs. Umar highlighted UNICEF’s decade-long support, including hazard risk analysis, contingency plans, emergency preparedness simulations, and WASH initiatives. NEMA is also preparing for the 2024 rainy season by coordinating with stakeholders and informing state governments about flood predictions. Ms. Munduate affirmed UNICEF’s commitment to developing training modules and providing support in food and nutrition, especially in conflict-affected areas. The visit included a tour of NEMA’s new Geo-Spatial Centre.
