National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has delivered more relief materials for distribution to provide succour to persons affected by the recent attacks in some communities of Bokkos and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
Recall that the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima had said during his recent visit to Plateau state over the 24th December 2023 attack, that the President has directed NEMA to provide relief materials to cushion the impacts of the attacks.
A team of NEMA-NCZ, SEMA, UNICEF, WHO were at Barkin Ladi, where they were received by the Chairman of the Local government and community leaders. The chairman appreciated the President and DG NEMA for the prompt response after the visit of the Vice President and service chiefs for the proactive measures rendered to the people affected in terms of food and non food items and promised they’re willing to cooperate with the State Government to ensure this ugly incident doesn’t occur again. However, they’re pleading for more support from the government.
The traditional leader, Da Hom Rai B/Ladi and ES SEMA thanked NEMA for always rendering support to cushion the effect of those affected in emergency situations.
The Director General NEMA Mustapha Habib Ahmed who was represented by the ZC NCZ Mr. Eugene Nyelong expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident and commiserated with families of those that lost their lives and persons that were displaced and those injured and receiving treatments. He said NEMA was complying fully with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through Vice President Kashim Shettima for the Agency to provide relief supports, expecially food, non food items and medical assistance for those affected. Furthermore, he said an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) has been activated comprising all sectors to further bring assistance in every place necessary. He explained that the items would be distributed in IDP camps and the various host communities as camp management is ongoing.
The Chairman, Bokkos Local Government, Mr Monday Kassah informed the team that they currently have 12 camps where IDPs are being managed and monitored by NEMA UNICEF, WHO, the Nigerian Red Cross and other stakeholders.
Present at the events were the various NGOs, DSS, Nigerian Civil Defense Corp, Ministry of Health and other stakeholders including emergency volunteers council members from the various local governments and the traditional rulers
