As part of efforts to mitigate occurrence of flood and other related disasters in the country, NEMA, MOO in a more proactive flood preparedness drive took this initiative to schools in Minna, Niger State.
The campaign which centred on proper waste management and flood preparedness was an initiative to inculcate proper waste management culture among students of schools in Minna
The campaign also taught the students how to think critically about their decisions, noting that it can affect their environment. The goal of the campaign among students is to create a positive shift from the habit of indiscriminate dumping of refuse towards ensuring mitigation of flood. It is expected that the success of achieving the change in these children who are leaders of tomorrow will result to a right attitude to waste management and flood mitigation subsequently.
The awareness campaign took place in Ahmadu Bahago Secondary School Bosso and Nigerian Teachers Institute Secondary School Minna. The students were enlightened on proper waste management and the negative impact associated with indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and open space thereby, causing flood and wide spread of disease such as malaria, typhoid and cholera.
