The flooding followed several hours of torrential rainfall that began on Saturday night and continued into the early hours of Sunday morning, overwhelming drainage systems and leading to widespread overflow across multiple communities, including Yolde Pate, Shagari, Sabon Pegi, and adjoining settlements in Yola South LGA. Homes, farmlands, and access roads were impacted by the flood.

The Deputy Governor was on ground with NEMA officials led by the Head of Yola Operation Office Mr Ladan Ayuba, the State Commissioner for Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Reintegration (RRR), Mallam Bello Hammandiram, the State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), and other stakeholders to assess the situation, interact with affected residents, and coordinate immediate interventions. Also present were the Brigade Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade, representatives of the Nigerian Police, NSCDC, and the Nigerian Red Cross and FRSC in saving lives of victims, providing immediate medical assistance and conducting rapid needs assessment.

In a swift response, NEMA activated its Search and Rescue Team, for the conduct of the rapid needs assessments, support evacuations, and identify temporary shelters for displaced persons. The Disaster Response Units (DRUs) of the 23 Brigade, Nigerian Army, and the Nigerian Air Force were also activated, with both commanders on ground providing support.

All hands are on deck to ensure the safety of lives and property of residents.
