The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provides this update on the ongoing search and rescue operations following the tragic boat mishap of Sunday, 17th August 2025, at the Kojiyo village area of Goronyo Dam, Sokoto State.
The search and rescue operations are being carried out by a multi-agency team comprising NEMA, Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Nigerian Police, Goronyo Local Government Authority, local divers, and the Nigerian Air Force Disaster Response Unit, which has been on stand by for aerial support.
The rescue operation has been aided by the Goronyo dam management efforts, which have held back the waters and significantly reduced the river’s water level, improving search effectiveness. The dam authorities have extended the temporary closure to three (3) days to enable intensified search operations until Thursday 21st August, 2025. This decision followed a request by the Sokoto State Government, based on recommendations from the joint search team.
Meanwhile, downstream communities along the Rima River have been duly notified of the planned release of water from the dam tomorrow. Traditional leaders (Sarakunan Ruwa) have been engaged to ensure riparian dwellers remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.
NEMA remains committed to sustaining the search and rescue operations in close collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.
The Agency extends its deepest sympathy to the affected families and assures the public that every effort is being made to bring closure to this tragic incident.
