On Monday, 25th August 2025, a Flood Disaster Simulation Exercise was carried out in Ahoada-West, Rivers State, bringing together national responders and community actors to test preparedness and coordination in flood emergencies.
The exercise began with local responders initiating rescue efforts, supported by professional divers who searched submerged areas for stranded persons. The Nigerian Navy deployed speed boats to move victims from flooded zones to safe locations, while the Nigerian Army and Air Force reinforced operations. A military helicopter airlifted the most severely injured victims directly to the hospital for urgent medical attention, demonstrating joint-force capabilities.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) coordinated the entire exercise, providing leadership, direction, and humanitarian support. An IDPs camp was established under NEMA’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) arrangements. Relief intervention included the distribution of food items, non-food supplies, and emergency stipends. In line with early warning measures, priority was given to those who had heeded evacuation alerts and relocated to host communities.
Nonetheless, NEMA ensured that those who refused to evacuate and had to be rescued were also supported after being moved into the camp.
The simulation underscored the critical importance of early warning compliance, inter-agency synergy, and effective humanitarian coordination in safeguarding lives and supporting recovery during flood emergencies.
