Summary of the Attack on Eight Communities in Ovia South-West, Edo State

A joint assessment team from NEMA and Edo SEMA, escorted by the Nigerian Army, conducted an on-site evaluation of attacks by unknown gunmen on eight communities in Ovia South-West LGA, Edo State. The affected communities include Madoti Camp, Gbelematen Camp, Eto Camp, Baba Dele Camp, Dipe Camp, Thousand Camp, Taiye Camp, and Sarafen Camp.

The attackers looted farms and homes, stealing cash crops, foodstuffs, and household supplies.

They committed violent acts, including sexual violence and arson, destroying over 36 houses.

An unspecified number of fatalities were recorded, with decomposing bodies found in Gbelematen.

Many individuals remain missing, while the injured receive treatment at local hospitals.

About 4,125 households have been displaced, seeking refuge in Taiye Camp.

Frequent attacks have forced school closures, and there are no medical facilities within a 165-community radius.

Community leaders have appealed for a military post in Madoti to prevent further attacks.

Provision of emergency relief materials such as mattresses, blankets, and clothing.

Immediate reconstruction support, including building materials and emergency shelters.

Establishment of a military post and increased security surveillance.

Support for farmers with agricultural inputs to restore livelihoods.

Deployment of medical personnel and psychosocial support services for survivors.

The attacks have caused severe destruction and displacement. Urgent intervention is necessary to address the immediate needs of affected persons and ensure long-term security.
