Following the gradual release of water from the Alau Dam and an official alert issued by the Chad Basin Development Authority, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Maiduguri Operations Office, has conducted surveillance and monitoring of water levels at critical points within Maiduguri metropolis.
On 27th July 2025, a team from the Maiduguri Operations Office carried out the monitoring exercise at strategic locations including Fori, Al Amin Daggash, Gwange, and Moro‑Moro Bridge.
Preliminary findings from the exercise indicated that current water levels remain within normal limits, and there is no immediate threat to surrounding communities. Nonetheless, NEMA Maiduguri remains on high alert and has assured residents that it will maintain round‑the‑clock monitoring and early warning updates to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Recall that Maiduguri and adjoining communities experienced significant flooding last year following sudden increases in water discharge from the dam. In view of this, the Agency is urging residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas to remain vigilant, heed official advisories, and promptly report any unusual rise in water levels.
The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to proactive disaster risk management and stressed the importance of community preparedness and stakeholder collaboration to avert a recurrence of last year’s devastating flood incident.
