The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, has conducted a flood impact assessment in communities affected by recent flooding in Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State following heavy rainfall and a request for intervention from the Honourable Member representing the constituency, Hon. Arc. Lanre Okunlola.
The assessment covered the communities of Orile, Coker, Aguda, Itire, Ikate and Ijesha, with the aim of determining the extent of damage, identifying affected households and documenting the immediate humanitarian needs of residents.
The assessment revealed that several residential buildings and business premises were inundated by floodwaters, resulting in damage to household property, disruption of livelihoods and restricted movement in parts of the affected communities.
Findings further indicated that the flooding was largely caused by intense rainfall, blocked drainage channels and inadequate maintenance of drainage infrastructure. During interactions with the assessment team, affected residents appealed for humanitarian assistance, including food items and other essential household materials, while also calling for improvements to drainage systems to reduce the impact of future flooding.
NEMA sympathized with the affected residents and assured them that the assessment findings would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities to facilitate necessary humanitarian intervention. The Agency also urged residents to support flood mitigation efforts by keeping drainage channels free of refuse, avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal and promptly reporting emergencies to relevant authorities.
