
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Operations Office, coordinated emergency response operations following the collapse of a one-storey building under construction along Sultan Road in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred at about 10:23 a.m. on Friday, 10th July, 2026, following which the Head of NEMA Kano Operations Office immediately activated the Agency’s Search and Rescue Team for deployment to the scene.
On arrival, NEMA joined other emergency responders in a coordinated rescue operation aimed at saving trapped victims, providing immediate assistance and ensuring the safe evacuation of casualties. Before the arrival of the NEMA team, the Kano State Fire Service, with support from members of the host community, had rescued four victims alive. NEMA’s Search and Rescue Team subsequently extricated the remaining trapped victim using specialized rescue equipment.
All the casualties were evacuated to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital for medical attention. The four rescued victims sustained injuries and are receiving treatment, while the victim extricated by the NEMA team was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital.
The response involved the Kano State Fire Service, Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police Force, Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), and members of the host community.
Following a thorough search of the collapsed structure and confirmation that all victims had been accounted for, rescue operations were officially concluded at about 11:43 a.m.
