ASSESSMENT OF WINDSTORM DISASTER IN OBUBRA LGA, CROSS RIVER STATE

The communities in Obubra woke up to a devastating windstorm that wreaked havoc in Apiapum, Obubra Urban, Ofunbongha Ward, Ovokwa, Ogurude, Isobo, Onyen Orangha, Ochon, Iyamoyong, Ohana, Ovonum, Ofodua, Ababene, Imabana Ochokwu, Ofukpa and Ogada communities in Obubra LGA, Cross River State. Officials of NEMA Uyo Operations office in collaboration with Cross River SEMA officials, DSS, Red Cross and community leaders visited the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment to determine the extent of the damage and identify the requirements to help cushion the effect of the windstorm disaster.The team was received on arrival by the community leaders led by Mr. Ovat Sunday Robert and Mr. Obasse Ebenezer. The Ag. Head NEMA Uyo Operations Office sympathized with the people over the disaster that affected the community. On their part, the community leaders appreciated NEMA and the state government for the quick response.The team was taken round to view the affected areas in the community and to see first-hand the impact of the disaster, which was beyond the coping capacity of the community. The incident destroyed/affected residential homes, places of worship, hospitals, schools, electrical poles, farmlands and economic trees rendering most of the victim’s homeless, jobless and their economic livelihood disrupted by the ferocious winds.
