ASSESSMENT OF WINDSTORM DISASTER IN IKOT OTU, IKOT EKPENE LGA, AKWA IBOM STATE

Sequel to the report of a devastating windstorm that wreaked havoc in Ikot Otu community in Ikot Ekpene LGA, Akwa Ibom State, Officials of the NEMA Uyo Operations led by the Ag. Head in collaboration with Akwa Ibom State SEMA (AKSEMA) official, Isaac Umanna and community leaders visited the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment to determine the extent of the damage and identify the requirements to help cushion the effect of the windstorm disaster.
The team was warmly received on arrival by the Chairman Village Council, Support Udo Udom Afang and Udoma Uwanna and other community leaders. The Ag. Head NEMA Uyo Operations Office, Mrs Mmandu Aisueni sympathized with the people over the disaster that affected the community. On their part, the community leaders appreciated NEMA and the State government for the quick response.
The team was taken round to view the affected areas in the community and to see first-hand the impact of the disaster which was beyond the coping capacity of the community. The incident destroyed/affected houses, household properties, worship centers, schools, factory, farmlands and economic trees rendering most of the victim’s homeless, jobless and economic livelihood disrupted.
The windstorm affected over three hundred households (300). The community solicited for assistance from the Federal Government.
