
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Gombe Operations Office, has conducted an assessment of recent windstorm and flood disaster that affected communities in Funakaye and Kwami Local Government Areas of Gombe State.
The assessment team, led by Mas’ud Tijjani Gaya, Assistant Chief Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (ACRRO), visited the affected communities to ascertain the extent of damage and immediate needs of the victims.
In Jurara community of Kwami LGA, the flood, which occurred on 4th September 2025, destroyed 135 houses and displaced over 500 residents. In addition, farmlands covering about 150 hectares were submerged, leading to significant losses of essential food crops such as rice, maize, and millet.
Similarly, in Funakaye LGA, the disaster destroyed significant number of houses and displaced over 300 residents. Farmlands covering approximately 168 hectares were also submerged, resulting to loss of key food crops, including rice, maize, and millet.
Speaking during the assessment, Mas’ud Tijjani Gaya noted that the incident had severe impact on the livelihoods of the residents. He emphasized the importance of community awareness and preparedness, stating: “Disaster management is a collective responsibility. He urges communities to remain vigilant and take proactive measures, especially as climate-related hazards such as floods and windstorms become more frequent.”
NEMA Gombe Operations Office has documented the findings and will forward its recommendations to the Agency’s headquarters for further necessary action.
