Stakeholders Engagement and Public Awareness Campaign on Fuel Tanker Accidents and Explosions in Jigawa State

On 18th June 2025, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Operations Office, conducted a stakeholders’ engagement and public awareness campaign at Shuwarin along the Dutse–Kano Road, Jigawa State. The initiative aimed to build community resilience and preparedness for fuel tanker accidents and explosions.

The campaign featured a community sensitization session where residents were warned about the dangers of fuel scooping from fallen tankers. They were strongly urged to maintain a safe distance from accident sites, alert authorities immediately, and understand the high risk of fires and explosions associated with such incidents.

A practical simulation exercise was also conducted, focusing on emergency response and best practices for tanker drivers and transport workers. The drill engaged stakeholders from the Federal and State Fire Services, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Nigeria Red Cross Society, Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), traditional leaders, NGOs, and the Tanker Drivers Association.

Following the simulation, an interactive review session was held where participants shared observations, identified potential gaps, and proposed measures to improve collaboration and preparedness. The Head of Operations of NEMA Kano commended all participating agencies and reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to promoting safety, disaster risk reduction, and proactive stakeholder engagement through ongoing awareness and training efforts.
