The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Benin Operations Office, has distributed relief materials to persons affected by recent flood and rainstorm disasters in Okpe, Sapele, and Uvwie Local Government Areas of Delta State.
The intervention, approved on behalf of the Federal Government by the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, was aimed at alleviating the hardship of disaster victims. Speaking during the distribution exercise in Sapele, the Director General NEMA who was epresented by Mr. Joseph Akpofabe, Assistant Chief Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, sympathized with the affected families and communities. She emphasized that the gesture was in line with NEMA’s mandate of providing timely succour to disaster-impacted populations across the country.
The exercise was closely monitored by Hon. Benedict Atanabene, the Member representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, to ensure transparency and accountability in the process. Relief items distributed included bags of rice, cartons of spaghetti, seasoning, and salt, which were shared under the supervision of NEMA officials.
Hon. Atanabene expressed gratitude to the NEMA DG for her swift response and magnanimity in approving the intervention. Also speaking, the President General of Sapele Local Government Area, Hon. Samson Eruteyan, commended the Federal Government and NEMA for their support, while appealing for additional assistance given the enormity of the needs.
The intervention was widely welcomed by the communities as a timely and much-needed relief effort, even as calls were made for more sustained support to enable full recovery from the impact of the disasters.
