NEMA Port Harcourt Office Strengthens Flood Preparedness Collaboration with FRSC Bayelsa

In a bid to bolster inter-agency coordination ahead of potential flood emergencies, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Port Harcourt Operations Office, has engaged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Bayelsa Sector Command in strategic discussions geared toward improved disaster preparedness and response.

The engagement took place on Tuesday, 30th July 2025, during a courtesy visit by NEMA’s team to the FRSC Sector Command, RS 6.4 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The visit was led by the Head of Operations, Mr. Ebhodaghe Eric, who conveyed warm greetings from the Director General of NEMA, stressing the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders in the face of anticipated flood threats.

During the visit, Mr. Eric emphasized the need for seamless coordination between disaster management and traffic regulatory agencies, especially during emergencies where mobility, timely evacuation, and the safety of affected populations become critical. He underscored the FRSC’s crucial role in ensuring smooth and safe movement during disasters, particularly in areas susceptible to flooding.

He noted that the purpose of the visit was to deepen institutional synergy with the FRSC in readiness for the peak of the rainy season, which often results in flash floods and disruption of road networks. According to him, “FRSC is a vital partner in our mission to reduce disaster risks and save lives. This engagement is part of NEMA’s broader stakeholder collaboration strategy to enhance emergency response capacity in Bayelsa and beyond.”

In his response, the FRSC Sector Commander, Prince I. Abosi, expressed appreciation for NEMA’s proactive approach and acknowledged the agency’s leadership role in coordinating disaster response across the country. He welcomed the partnership and assured NEMA of the FRSC’s full support, noting that his command is always ready to work hand-in-hand with emergency management agencies for the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

Commander Abosi added that joint simulations, information sharing, and coordinated deployment during emergencies would go a long way in minimizing casualties and ensuring public order during flood situations. He further pledged the readiness of FRSC patrol teams to assist in rescue efforts and traffic control during disaster events, especially in flood-prone corridors across Bayelsa.

The meeting concluded with mutual assurances of continued collaboration, with both agencies agreeing to maintain open communication channels and explore joint awareness campaigns to sensitize communities on flood risk and safe road use during emergencies.

This engagement is part of NEMA’s ongoing state-level outreach across the South-South zone to build stronger, more resilient response networks ahead of forecasted weather-induced disasters.
