As part of its proactive measures, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Minna Operations Office, carried out a public sensitization campaign in Lambatta, Gurara LGA, to educate residents on the dangers associated with fuel tanker accidents and fire outbreaks.
Representing the Head of Operations, Mr. Hussaini Isah, the Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Unit, Dr. Zainab A. Ndanusa, warned against the dangerous practice of fuel scooping and emphasized the need for responsible driving behavior. Lambatta was strategically selected for the awareness campaign due to its status as a major stopover point for long-haul trucks, tankers, and articulated vehicles, where drivers often park for rest or vehicle repairs.
The event featured presentations from key agencies:
FRSC: Delivered a lecture on safe driving practices for tanker drivers.
Federal Fire Service: Educated participants on fire prevention techniques and the proper use of fire extinguishers.
Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS): Conducted a practical demonstration on basic first aid and life-saving techniques.
Other stakeholders present included SEMA, NSCDC, the Nigeria Police Force, NOA, NURTW, NUPENG, NATO, and community traditional leaders. All parties expressed their commitment to collaborating on efforts to prevent tanker-related incidents.
The event concluded with a Q&A session and a strong call for similar outreach programs in other communities.
