
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Owerri Operations Office, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, collaborated with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to conduct a flood sensitization campaign at the bustling World Bank Market in Owerri, Imo State.
The campaign opened with a welcome address by Mrs. Regina Iroha, the Southeast Zonal Director of NOA, who emphasized the importance of community awareness and collaboration in reducing disaster risks.
Representing the Head of NEMA’s Owerri Operations Office, Principal Search and Rescue Officer, Mr. Iweala Sunday, delivered a comprehensive presentation on flood management strategies. He stressed the need for preparedness, mitigation, and coordinated response at state, local, and community levels. Mr. Sunday outlined major causes of flooding, pointing out how indiscriminate waste disposal and construction along waterways exacerbate the risks. He urged residents to embrace proper waste management and other responsible environmental practices as preventive measures.
The campaign featured active contributions from stakeholders and an engaging interactive session, during which participants raised questions and shared experiences. In separate remarks, Engr. Emeka Onuoha from the Ministry of Environment and Hon. Ndubuisi Ndeka, Chairman of the World Bank Market, commended NEMA and NOA for taking the sensitization directly to marketplaces, where it has the greatest impact.
The event underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between government agencies and communities in addressing the challenges of recurrent flooding in Imo State.
