In continuation of its commitment to provide timely assistance to communities affected by natural disasters, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed essential relief materials to persons and households impacted by a recent windstorm disaster in Cross River State.
The intervention, which took place on Thursday, July 30, 2025, was carried out through the NEMA Uyo Operations Office and targeted vulnerable communities across Njuk North and South within the Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency.
Speaking during the flag-off of the distribution exercise, the Head of Operations, who was represented by Mr. Victor Akpakpan of the Relief and Rehabilitation Unit, conveyed the sympathies of the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, to the affected communities. He expressed concern over the destruction caused by the windstorm, including damage to homes, infrastructure, and means of livelihood. Mr. Akpakpan reassured the victims that the Federal Government, through NEMA, remains fully committed to supporting citizens during emergencies and would continue to provide succor in line with the agency’s mandate.
“The items being distributed today are meant to cushion the immediate effects of the disaster and support your recovery process,” he said. He further urged community members to utilize the relief materials judiciously while working closely with local authorities to rebuild stronger and safer homes.
On behalf of the Member representing Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency, Hon. Dr. Emil Lemke Inyang, who was represented by Professor Utti, commendations were extended to NEMA for what he described as a “swift and thoughtful response.” He noted that the agency’s quick intervention reflects a deep understanding of the urgency required in disaster response and recovery.
Several community members, including Mrs. Offiong Ndem and Mr. Emmanuel Bassey, expressed heartfelt gratitude to NEMA and the Federal Government for not leaving them to their fate. “This support gives us hope that we are not forgotten. We sincerely thank the Director General and all those involved in making this happen,” Mrs. Ndem stated.
The distribution exercise was conducted under the watch of local government officials, community leaders, personnel from the Nigerian Army, and other relevant stakeholders. The presence of the media and civil society observers added transparency and credibility to the process.
As weather-related disasters continue to impact communities across Nigeria, NEMA’s proactive interventions—backed by effective coordination with local stakeholders—highlight the importance of institutional preparedness and empathy in national emergency response mechanisms.
