POST-FLOOD ASSESSMENT IN OSHODI-ISOLO FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY, LAGOS STATE

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office (LOO), conducted a post-flood assessment in Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency, Lagos State, following a formal request for intervention from the constituency’s representative, Hon. Barr. Jesse Joe-Onuakalasu, Member, Federal House of Representatives.

In a prompt response, the Head of Operations, Mr. Olatunde Mohammed, led the assessment team comprising other officials from the Lagos Operations Office. The mission aimed to evaluate the flood incident, determine the extent of damages, and identify the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected population.

Findings from the assessment revealed that inadequate drainage systems, poor water channelization, blockage of canals, and encroachment on floodplains were major contributors to the flooding in the Ejigbo, Okota, and Ilasamaja communities. Although the floodwaters have subsided, the affected areas still require humanitarian support.
As part of the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) awareness initiative, Mr. Olatunde Mohammed engaged community members on the importance of maintaining a clean environment and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse along drainage channels. He emphasized that disaster management is a collective responsibility and cautioned residents against practices that could lead to disease outbreaks such as cholera, urging them to take preventive measures seriously.
