Celebration of the 2024 UN International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

The 2024 UN International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed on October 13, highlighted global efforts to mitigate the risks associated with natural disasters, with a focus on education and empowering the youth.

The theme for this year, “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future,” emphasized the role of education in safeguarding communities and enabling young people to take part in disaster risk reduction initiatives.

Globally, events were held to promote disaster preparedness and resilience. In Nigeria, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kano Territorial Office, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) of Jigawa State, hosted an event in Jigawa State. This took place at one of the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps located in Kiyawa Local Government Area (LGA). The focus was on addressing the growing threat of climate-related disasters such as floods.

The celebration underscored the need for both local and international actions to build safer, more resilient communities for future generations.
