The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to leveraging space-based technology to strengthen disaster risk management, preparedness, early warning, and emergency response across Nigeria.
She gave the assurance on Thursday, 30th July, 2026, while receiving a delegation from the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) at the NEMA Headquarters in Abuja.
The Director General NEMA noted that the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters, particularly flooding, underscore the importance of adopting innovative technologies to support disaster management.
She requested for collaboration of the UNOOSA in strengthening the Agency’s capacity to utilize space-based solutions for disaster management.
The UNOOSA delegation, was led by Mr. Jumpei Takami, who said that the visit was to express appreciation to the Director General and NEMA for the Agency’s support towards the implementation of the UNOOSA Digital Twin Project, which is currently being piloted in Lagos State.
He explained that the Digital Twin Project is designed to harness geospatial technologies and digital modelling to enhance disaster preparedness and response.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of NEMA, UNOOSA, and NASRDA to strengthening the application of space technology and international cooperation in building Nigeria’s resilience to disasters.
