NEMA, Sahel Consulting Explore Partnership to Strengthen Climate Risk Early Warning

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to strengthening disaster risk reduction and early warning systems, particularly for climate-sensitive and agricultural communities.

She made the commitment during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Sahel Consulting and Nutrition Limited to the Agency’s Headquarters in Abuja.

The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, who was represented by the Director of Human Resource Management, Dr. Emenike Umesi, conveyed the Agency’s readiness to collaborate with credible partners to translate climate information into practical early action that protects lives, livelihoods, and national assets.

In his remarks, the Deputy Director, Planning, Research and Forecasting, Mr. Manfred Anusim, described the engagement as timely, emphasizing that strong institutional coordination is critical to ensuring that climate forecasts deliver meaningful impact at the community level.

The Sahel Consulting delegation, led by Mr. Chinedu Agbara, presented an overview of its climate-focused agricultural project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The initiative, he said, aims to strengthen climate analytics, deploy automatic weather stations, and enhance climate advisory services for farmers through radio, digital platforms, and extension systems.

Discussions during the meeting focused on identified key areas of collaboration, including strengthening national early warning systems, integrating disaster risk information into agricultural advisories, and promoting climate risk education and research.
