On 12th August 2025, heavy overnight rainfall caused flooding in Tofa and Lolitapi communities of Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State.
Following the incident, a joint assessment team comprising officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Minna Operations Office, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), and other relevant stakeholders conducted an on-the-spot assessment to ascertain the extent of damages and impacts.
The joint assessment with the participation of community leaders recorded 607 persons affected, 144 displaced, 114 houses and 154 farmlands (rice and maize) damaged. Fortunately, no lives were lost. The displaced persons are currently being sheltered within the host community.
The assessment further revealed that the severity of the flooding was worsened by inadequate drainage systems and an undersized bridge on the Lambata–Lapai road, which obstructed water flow.
This incident underscores the urgent need for improved drainage systems, resilient infrastructure, and proactive flood mitigation measures across Gurara Local Government Area to reduce future risks.
