The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is seeking collaboration with state governments and other relevant agencies to strengthen disasterrisk management across the country.
The director general of NEMA, Mohammad Sani Sidi, who stated this in Abuja yesterday, at the validation workshop on strengthening disaster risk management and recovery project, called on state governments to empower the State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA) to educate the masses on disaster risk reduction.
He explained that with proper sensitization programme, which is part of the target of the event and programme, so many people would be able to handle disaster problem when the need arises.
The DG, who was represented by the deputy director, planning, research and forecast, Kayode Fagbemi explained that the country currently has about 25 SEMAs in 25 states and urged the state governments to empower them for better performances.
He noted that the programme, is part of the United Nations Development (UNDP), in collaboration with NEMA, which began since 2014 and it is to end in 2017; with the aim of strengthening the capacity of the agency and other emergency institutions and mechanism to prepare, respond and aid recovery at federal, state and local government levels.[fb_embed_post href=”https://www.facebook.com/nemanigeria/posts/1178902612141446/” width=”750″/]
